LAURA PORATH

ARTIST STATEMENT

Laura Porath’s practice is primarily stone carving, which she approaches as a conversation with the material. Rather than imposing a predetermined form, she works to discover what is already present within the stone, allowing its character, limitations, and possibilities to be the guide.

Alongside sculpture, Porath creates large scale abstract paintings. The precision and restraint required in stone carving stands in contrast to the freedom of painting, which allows for spontaneity, experimentation, and a more intuitive approach to creating.

Porath graduated with a BFA Honours in Sculpture from the School of Art at the University of Manitoba in 2011. Her sculptural work has received national and international recognition.
